Time Capsule - connected USB drive keeps taking ages for access

I got a current gen Time Capsule for Christmas. I have connected a 2tb Seagate Freeagent drive to it. 80% of the time I have a 3minute wait for the drive to be accessible often causing finder to beach ball. It happens on two different laptops and I am connecting on 5ghz within 20feet of the TC. This does not happen connecting the USB drive directly to the laptop, connection time is 10 secs, wake up time is 5 secs.

CASE 1:
I open a film from the drive using VLC and begin to watch however if I pause the film and walk away for 5 mins, when I come back there is not a 5 second or even 10 second pause for the drive to start up again but about 3-4mins.

CASE 2:
I simply open the drive navigate to a part that hasn't been cached and get a 3 min weight.


Any ideas? Is this just broken?

I'm still trying to figure out how to get a USB external drive that's plugged into an Airport Express to show up as an option for a Time Machine backup. Why doesn't it show up??
