Time Capsule Connection Trouble

I have a first edition Time Capsule that I use with as a NAS with my 5.1 Macbook running 10.6. I have an external hard drive connected to it, and whenever I am downloading or streaming a file from it and it gets interrupted (e.g. I have to Force Quit if it hangs, which happens a lot unfortunately) I can no longer connect to the Time Capsule and I have to unplug it to get it to connect again.

Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks.
