I know there are many slow backup / slow internet threads about Time Capsule, but I haven't been able to find one with quite the same problem I'm experiencing.

I'm getting good >1 MB/s speeds when I backup with Time Machine to Time Capsule over wireless and about ~12 MB/s when using ethernet. Similarly, the network speed when using the internet is equally acceptable.

However, when I'm trying to transfer files manually to Time Capsule as a hard drive, I get barely 100 kb/s, and an estimated 100 hours or so to transfer a 10GB file. This is true for both wireless and ethernet, and it doesn't seem to make a difference which I use.

This doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes the transfer speeds are just fine. Recently I turned Time Machine back on after not using it for a long time. When Time Machine is turned on (not when it's actually backing up — just since I've turned it back on, so there's no other network activity going on) the transfer speeds drop to kb/s levels. I'm using a late 2007 MacBook. Any ideas why this might be?

Thanks.
