Time capsule freezing up my Macbook

So I am trying to backup my Macbook with a time capsule. The internet I have is way to slow so I am just using an ethernet cord. I set it up and when I clicked on the "backup now" option, it just stayed in the "preparing backup" stage and then my computer freezes to the point that I have to restart it. Could there be something wrong with the time capsule?
