Time capsule hard drive - does it sleep?

Does anyone know if this sleeps until you actually use it. I ask this as although my TC router is on most of the time, it is used as a wifi router for mainly my iPad / iPhone. Does it read the hard drive all the time it is on, or only when I want to access data on it? If it sleeps, it may prolong the life of the HD?
