I just bought a new time capsule and I'm wanting to perform the initial backup via ethernet. I have wireless turned on though. I have it directly connected through ethernet also. How can I make sure the backup is going through ethernet ?

Ethernet should automatically take priority over a wireless connection. To make absolutely certain it's set to do this, navigate to your Network preferences pane, then click on the gear icon in the lower left, then to the Set Service Order option. This is typically the setup:
