Hi, I cant decide whether to buy time capsule, or extreme.

Usage:
- want to use for time machine for two macbooks
- want to connect network disk
- want as good wifi signal within flat as possible
- want as silent solution as possible

any advice?

Extreme plus external drive. Much easier to upgrade storage later on if you need to, and if the Extreme were to die you don't lose all your Time Machine history.

Extreme lets you partition the disk so you can have a Time Machine partition on your drive for the MacBooks and a storage partition. By the time it is all said and done, the cost is the same.

The time capsule internal drive should be faster than an external drive, if that matters to you. These tests were done on gigabit ethernet.

This same drive clocks at over 100MB/s when directly connected. I assume performance would be similar with an external drive on an Airport Extreme, but I don't have one to test.
