My time capsule is beyond frustrating after years of faithful service. 1-2 times a day I need to restart it as it loses internet connectivity.

I’d like to get a new router.

What’s a good option for a router. Also, can I connect a time capsule as a device to continue backups to our Mac, even using another router?

My opinion only:

If it's time to upgrade the wifi in your home, you should take a good look at the various "mesh systems" that are out there.

These use two or three "nodes" that link together automatically and provide seamless coverage all over the house.

There are various systems, including:
- Linksys Velop
- Netgear Orbi
- eero
- google wifi
- Ubiquiti "Amplifi"
... and others

Most have "USB ports", but to my knowledge they DON'T (at least not yet) work with NAS drives.

For backups, you might consider moving to an "external drive" paradigm (connect drive to Mac, backup, disconnect drive, etc.)
I'd consider that to be more reliable "in a moment of extreme need" anyway.
I'd suggest either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper instead of Time Machine.
