I have an iMac with external drive directly connected via USB as a 1Tb iTunes / iPhoto / iMovie store.

I use a 2TB Time Capsule via time machine to back up the iMac AND ALSO the external drive.

The iMac failed, and whilst i waited on the replacement i used my mac mini. Now i have my new iMac but have chosen not to restore fully from Time Machine, and used the opportunity to create a new clean system with partial copy back of key data. (also because os and software versions updated on the new imac and i did not want data clashes)

As i now have the external connected to the new iMac, time machine sees this as a new PC and wants to back up the iMac and external as a new disk image. This would fill the time capsule, and delete all of the old iMacs backup. I don't want to waste the days involved in the time capsule backing up the external drive files that it already has a copy on it of (abeit on a different disk image) as well as the wear on the external. I would also be without a backup during this (and exposed to disk failure)

My question is this:

Is there a way for the time capsule to see the new iMac as the old time machine disk image so that the external disk files are seen as already backed up? I want the time capsule to back up the new imac and external moving forward.
