Time Capsule via Unencrpyted Public Network?

I have a MBP that connects wirelessly to the Internet via an unencrypted public network that I don't have access to (physical or administrative).

Can/should I buy and safely use the Time Capsule --or any other wireless NAS given this situation? Or am I limited to physical connection to any NAS via USB or ethernet - only?

My goal is to backup data (photos, video and mp3s) and have the option to stream them to my laptop or PS3. Nothing sensitive or private would be stored on this device.
