Time Capsule with Time Machine & a network HD?? Help!

Hello,
I have my modem plugged into the TC which gives us Wifi. I have an external HD plugged into the TC.

Can Time machine back up the data that is on this networked HD?? I cant find any info anywhere.

If not, is there anyway that time machine will ever do this (im thinking of ditching the TC and replacing with a standard router)??
