I' m new to this forum but having using Mac products for about 1 1/2 years now, I'll never go back to PC. But my question is this, I have all the media for my family stored on 2 TB HD, but have failed to back up my laptop in the 1 1/2 yrs I've had it. And based on everything I've read it's not a matter of if, it's when something goes wrong. So if I buy a 3TB TC and connect the 2 TB HD, but partition 500 GB of the HD for Time Machine and use the remaining 3TB on the TC for more media; will this work?

Yes that will work. You can also plug in your external HDD into your time capsule and use that for your films and movies (or you backups, which is what I do).
If your HDD is in NTFS you might need software so that your mac can read that type of format.
