I am trying to decide whether to pick up a 3tb time capsule or just getting a 3tb external hard drive .. what do you guys think ?

What are you backing up to the Time Capsule? If it's a laptop, is it stationary or would you prefer to keep it mobile?

If it's an iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro or stationary MacBook/MacBook Pro, I'd use an external hard drive. If it's an MB/MBP/MBA, I would use a Time Capsule.

going to back up my imac .. might also try and back up another imac which is on a different floor

Hmm, if you're backing up more than one machine it might be better to get a Time Capsule. Or, and I'm assuming you have a router already, you can get a Synology NAS or something similar that is Time Machine compatible and use that instead.

If you're looking to upgrade your router, the Time Capsule is a great all in one solution.

Do you need the other TC functions:
IP router with several ports
USB port for printer or HD
wifi base station

If you don't the functions above, consider a less expensive USB 3 external drive.
