Time machine: 1.5gb backup saved to hard drive instead of external?

before i formatted i had 15gb of Backup data on my mbp hdd, i formatted and tired time machine again and it backs up to my external but i now have 1gb of backup on my hdd why is this?

Local Snapshots that are saved to the internal disk when Time Machine is running and not connected to the external drive. Avoid it by either having Time Machine turned off and do backups manually (right click the icon and choose Back Up Now), or just disable it.
