Bought a 500GB usb drive for time machine backups and other stuff.

when i first plugged it in time machine said it needed to format it for usage.

it formatted it using a file system that windows clearly doesnt understand, so what i want to do is take off my existing time machine backups, re-partition the drive into 2 sections - one for time machine, the other for misc files from my windows machine and macbook.

can i just move all the files off the usb drive, format, re-partition accordingly then put the files back on, or has time machine got some hidden files/data that i dont know about that may corrupt if i reformat?

also - can i re-partition on the fly with a macbook? i reckon that would be easier....
