does time machine back up other external hard drives?
like i have my mbp, my timemachine hd, and another hd with other files.
could the timeMachine hd back up both mbp hd and the other external hd at the same time?

Yes. I believe by default Time Machine will back up any external hard drives you have connected to your computer.
