Time Machine and encrypted folders

I have a quick time machine question.

I had my MacBook backed up on time machine before it crashed. I had a couple of folders (disk images I suppose) password protected. They were encrypted created through disk utility. I'm not seeing them in my Time Machine backups. Am I missing something or are they lost for good?
