Time Machine and external Ethernet HDD enclosure

Hi,

I've read several topics here, but none have answered my question. Has anyone been able to get an external Ethernet hard drive to work with Time Machine? I don't want/need to change my wireless router and would like to be able to plug in an external LAN hdd to it. I've read that it can be done and that it can't be done. Has anyone here been able to make it work? If so, could you post a few pointers?
