time machine and upgrading to snow leopard

So my bro wants to do this..can someone tell me if this will work ok?

He currently has Leopard 10.5.8 on his iMac right now, and wants to do this:

time machine backup --> clean leopard install --> SL install --> time machine recover

Will this work and will all of his photos, music, and other files will be restored?
