Time Machine Back ups bigger than expected

Hi,
Can anyone advise on exactly what time machine is backing up?
I've disabled the time machine function so it isn't locally storing snapshots but it still seems to be creating pretty large back ups when I start one manually.
Last night it backed up 6Gb and tonight I ran another just to check and it was 1.96Gb. I've literally done nothing but turn the machine off and on again between backups.

I'm running on a brand new MBA which came with Lion pre-installed.
