Time Machine Backup Failed?

I plugged in my Time Machine like normal and it just says a big red "Failed", info says "The Backup Volume Could not be Mounted". I don't get it! What's wrong? I have the G-Tech G Drive, it's brand new and has never left the table I set it on. Weirdly: all my past files are still accessible.
