Time Machine backup file locked

My MacBook Pro died and I tried restoring the time machine backup to another machine. I get a message saying the file is being used by another computer (which it isn't). I'm thinking a backup may have been in process when it died, any idea how to unlock the file so I can recover the data?

Try using the tmutil command from the terminal. Enter tmutil by itself in terminal and it will list a bunch of options. Maybe one of the options can help you.
