My dad's 2013 iMac is running Yosemite (10.10.5) and we recently bought him a new 5TB backup drive to replace his previous, nearly full backup drive. The backup drive is connected to a new Orico 10-port USB 3 hub, and both the drive and hub are self powered.
I tried 4-5 backups, the first failed after about 3 hours and subsequent backups failed anywhere between 10 seconds and 3 minutes, consistently. (There was a reboot done after the first backup as well.)
Regarding time machine
The backup however failed to run. I checked the console log for the following errors:
We've never had this issue before at all. Why is it trying to backup a file to NULL?
Regarding permissions
It seems to me, and I'm no expert, that the permissions on the drive may be a bit messed up. Some items have permissions set for his primary admin account, and then his secondary "Pro Tools" admin account, and then some are just "System" or "everyone".... sometimes there are multiple "everyones" with different settings.
I don't know why any of the settings are like that. What should they be set to? I assume both his main and secondary admin accounts should have full permissions to all files. (The backup is running under his main account.)
And out of curiosity, what happens if his boot drive fails and instead of restoring from the backup (maybe it wasn't working or he needed to do a clean install) I try to restore individual files from the backup to his (fresh install) new account with a new username -- will that not work? Should I turn permissions off altogether for his boot drive?
