Time machine backup to encrypted disk image - won't work

OS X 10.5, Intel Mac.

I want to backup my computer to an encrypted disk image on a USB hard drive. The image is formatted as Mac OS X Extended + Journaled. Problem is that Time Machine doesn't show the image in the Choose Disk menu.

I've used the terminal command to show unsupported volumes and it still doesn't show up.

This happens with both Truecrypt images and PGP Desktop disk images. I can't use Apple's own encrypted disk images (security concerns.)

Any help?

OK, the disk image contains a .com.apple.timemachine.supported invisible file on it.
