Not sure if this is even possible. I have an ASUS router that has built in Time Machine support. I have a 3TB HD plugged into it that I can backup my Mac when on my home network. I assumed that if I was able to VPN in, I could do the same. My assumption was wrong haha.

I'm currently using OpenVPN to access my home network. I'm able to access all the drives and computers on this network, so I know the VPN is working. I'm unable to do a Time Machine backup though, is this even possible using a VPN?

Have you tried mounting the drive via SMB first? I don’t really know how to get it to work or if it will. The official developer document regarding Time Machine and SMB is here. Worth a shot.
