time machine backup

I recently bought a larger external drive to have time machine use as a second site for back up.That is working fine but it notifies me every few days that it is not able to backup to the previous hard drive. In options the hard drive is not listed as an option to exclude. When I plug in the old external drive it does show up but it is greyed out and I can not select it to exclude. Any suggestions?
