Time Machine Backups Older Than a Week Aren't Available

I have Time Machine backing up 160 GB (my Mac) to a 500 GB partition on a 1 TB external drive, via Airport Extreme. Strangely, when I open TM (the program, not the folder), there's just nothing older than a week or so. What's going on?

Did you wait for something like 30s to check if the backup is actually available?

A slow ext HDD may cause very slow respond in Time Machine. Since most of the time Machine backup files are in small pieces, even though the HDD has high sequential speed + USB 3.0 connection. It may still react very slow.
