Time machine behaviour using Timecapsule vs AEBS with external drive

Is there any functional difference between how Time Machine behaves when your network has a Timecapsule vs an AEBS with attached USB drive.

Specifically, I understand that with time capsule the drive is just found and backups start automatically. With AEBS, do you have to manually connect (aka mount or something) the USB drive before backups will start?

I already have an AEBS and am wondering if I can get away with just buying a USB drive instead of having to also buy a Time capsule?
