Hello , hope you have time to help me out.

Time machine comes with the message that it cant backup when external time machine disk i have been using for a year is plugged in.

When i look in disk utility the external drive is in mac os extended journaled format, but the internal drive is in AFPS format, can this be the reason ? i dont know at what apple update the file system was changed on my mac air, its running CATALINA 10.15.2 now.

What do i do ?

No that is not the problem. The Time Machine disk still needs to use the older format you have there.

I could be the drive failed if it just stopped working all of a sudden. You might try reformatting the drive then try again fresh.

The external disk i use for time machine, seems to work fine, i ran a repair with disk utility and no errors, have some other files on the drive and they work fine. What can i do ?

For some reason, sometimes Time Machine just flakes out and erasing the drive and starting over fixes it.

SOLVED ! There was not space enough left on the internal SSD, the apple software should tell this, but thats apple for you !
