hi guys

i had this macbook pro 15 inch for a year and a half

it is 10.5.8 which is leopard

i love it there is absolutely no problem with it

till i got a 1 tb external hard drive
i want to use time machine to back up my computer but in the middle or the beginning of the backing up process it shows me the GRAY WINDOW which says you must hold the restart button for several seconds for the computer to shut down
it several languages

it happens with me every time
and i am very frustrated with it
please help

Which specific external HDD do you use then?
And you do get that kernel panic screen only when you have the HDD connected and want to use Time Machine or does the MBP simply crash when the HDD is connected?

first of all

i know its not not the external hard drive
because i just switched it with a whole different hard drive and still the same problem

what happens is this

i plug it in

and click back up

it starts backing up

a small window showing me the progress

and the after a while

the window pops up and the computer freezes

and i only saw this screen when this happens

If it is not the HDD, then what exact external HDD enclosure do you use and how is it connected?
I had a USB stick once, that brought my Mac to crash, though never an external HDD, be it self made or prefabricated.

it is a
wd my passport

that is the name of the brand and company

and it is connected by a usb cable to a min usb

search it in google images and you will be able to find it

Is that WD (Western Digital) My Passport HDD the enclosure you use or just the second HDD you tried or is it the first and second HDD you tried or is it two different drives but you tested them differently?

anyone have a solution

Btw, bumping is frowned upon.
If you could wait one and a half years, another 23 minutes or even six hours shouldn't be that much of a problem.

Btw 2, there are other options to back up, look at CarbonCopyCloner for example.

Btw 3, have you taken a look at the links I provided?
Especially the one titled "Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic" could help, if you would post the results.
