Time Machine disk changing

I'm want to change the physical disk that Time Machine uses, but cannot find a way to keep using the original backups.backupdb file. I'd like to move the file to the new drive, and keep adding to it, but it won't copy or move, and I'm not sure it would be recognized, anyway.

Suggestions?

I agree. It seems like something that many TM users would want to do after a while, so I reckon it deserves at least a knowledge base type document on their website.
