Time machine....external drive

I have an iMac and want to upgrade my external drive. My question is will I be able to use my external for time machine backups as well as image backup storage?
I remember when I bought my mbp the first time i set up time machine i got a pop up that said something like the drive has files on it and need to be empty to setup time machine back ups.

Yes, you can use the same drive for Time Machine backups and external storage. The only catch is that it has to be formatted for Time Machine first. Thus, it first has to be empty. Then you can format it, set up partitions, and let Time Machine go to work.

For example, I have a Mac Mini with 500GB of internal storage. I have that connected to a 2TB external drive. The external drive has two partitions: 1TB is for Time Machine, and the other 1TB I use as a DVR with EyeTV.
