I just got an external hard drive a couple of days ago and set up time machine. It took 3 tries for the initial back up to finish (it froze the first 2 times). Now about half the time it does it's hourly back-ups, time machine will freeze, and so will the finder. I've also had it freeze other applications such as Safari. Force quitting doesn't work, I have to do a hard restart. I verified the drive with disk utilities, and it said it was fine. I made sure the drive was set as directed by other posts. I have not gotten any error messages. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey autumnsong,

I had problems with Time Machine too. I just let it do the first few backups through ethernet and it's been fine since.

This probably won't answer your question though.

I read somewhere that Time Machine sometime freezes when things it's trying to backup are open. It's a long shot but try saving and quitting everything and see what happens.

Hope this helps!
