Time Machine- full

Got a message that my Time Machine was low on space.

What is the best way to take care of this?

new to MAC.

I assume I would want the initial backup to always stay in place so I could go back to original?

Is there a way to delete one time slot or even maybe a week or month?

I-Mac Quad.

Just let it be. It'll start to delete old backups when it has no space left
