Time Machine HDD replacement help

So had some issues with carbon copy when I replaced my 120gb HD w a 500GB HD. after finally getting my MPB running the only thing that came up was a big ? file folder. It said it could not boot from the HD and that I needed to partition it in GUID or something like that. So I reinstalled OSX snow leapord which was an upgrade from my previous OS and attempted to use my time machine backup to load my old files and now there is a lot missing. i.e. my itunes and iphoto library. safari favorites, and im sure much more I havent looked into it with a ton of detail but any advice would be helpful thanks.
