Hi
I have an imac and macbook pro.
I want to backup both machines to my external HD via AP extreme/time machine.
Should I partition the HD or can multiple machines access one backup file or will they overwrite one another?

I have tried various things including a partition and can see the backup but not access it?

Any help greatly appreciated but you have have to talk slowly!!

You don't have to partition. It will allow you to backup multiple computers to the same drive and partition. This is a benefit because you're not limiting the size of one of the particular computers.

Wow, that was quick, thanks.

So will I be able to access all files from either machine?

Will the automatic updating keep them both backed up?

Appreciate the help, thanks

Each computer is only able to access its own files via the GUI interface. However, in the drive there will be a disk image for each computer, and you can dive into that. Do not change anything in here though as that can create problems with your backup. Also be sure to unmount (eject) each image when you are done browsing. Otherwise the other computer will be unable to backup during that time. And yes, automatic backup will run hourly when they're on.
