According to Time Machine I have 52 GB included for my backup which sounds right since "Get Info" on Macintosh HD shows 52GB used. So I created a a 125GB partition on my external HD just for use by Time Machine. Well, Time Machine used that 125GB in just a couple days or so without me doing anything other than some general web surfing. I wouldn't have thought it would have used up that much space that fast.

What am I missing???? So how much space should I have allocated for Time Machine usage? Any advice or thoughts are much appreciated.

You need to customise exactly what you want to backup. If you backup everything it will eat up space very quickly.

I have an 80Gb external HD and have it set up to just backup one folder with all my work in it. That used up 40Gb of the 80Gb drive, and it should probably fill up in 12 months or so. Then it will start discarding the oldest files.
