Time Machine incorrectly stating not enough space

My time machine drive is 500GB and the used space on my harddrive is about 400GB. After installing iPhoto (which increased my used space from 300GB to 400GB), my timemachine is stating that there isn't enough space.. for some reason it thinks it needs 600GB to backup 400GB of stuff.. is it because I am now using an encrypted backup? I find it hard to believe that time machine needs more than 100GB for maintenance space..
