2011 13" MBA here with 128GB of space. The actual backup file is about 75GB and I initiated the backup an hour ago. It has only backed up 12GB so far.

The backup disk is a 1TB WD My Passport if that matters.

It is being painfully slow and I don't know why!

Any thoughts?

Just by what I went through this morning, that is fast. My 2011 MBP took well over three hours to backup 5GB.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

Is this the first time you've used this HDD to run backup? Usually the first time takes a while. After that it will normally take only a few minutes depending on how much data has changed between backups.

The initial backup should be done via ethernet. It will take a couple of hours and then you can switch to wi-fi for subsequent backups.
