Hello,
So I'm very frazzled and upset right now. I have kind of a weird setup on my MBP (2011); however, I never had a problem at all with Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion.
What's happening is that I have my internal HD split in half (one half for the OS, the other half for TM backups). When I had Mountain Lion on the MBP, I used the multiple-back-up ability with TM, and used an external hard drive to back up as well as the internal HD. Never had a problem, ever. When opening a folder in Finder and going into Time Machine, it worked like a charm.
Then enter Mavericks. I decided to do a clean install this time around, which went smoothly enough. I let the system do its' Spotlight indexing, etc., then went ahead and did a full backup on both HD's (the internal and external) on TM. The backups went just fine. However, when opening any folder in Finder and then selecting Time Machine to go into the 'starfield' window, the folder would abruptly resize, then go to my main user folder (the ~ level folder), and enter the starfield view, but there would be weird "cuts" between the windows going back in time, and sometimes it wouldn't even show anything, just a long line of black "finder" windows. If that makes any sense.
I decided to boot into my Snow Leopard install on another external HD to test and see if something was wrong with the TM disk. Nothing wrong at all - SL showed the proper starfield view with everything in the window going back in time just fine. I also did a repair permissions of the Mavericks HD and verified/repaired the TM disks, but they all checked out fine, and didn't make a difference.
I checked Console out and saw a repetitive error message :
error -35 while resolving alias to backup target
I tried removing the TM backup disks from the list, then re-adding them, to no avail.
However, this does not make sense at all because Snow Leopard (and a manual browsing of the TM disk) showed the proper files all backed up.
I'm so sorry if this isn't making any sense at all! I'm just very upset right now - feeling so lost and frustrated. I usually feel confident with OS X and know pretty much the in's and out's, but this is really confusing and frustrating to me. I have a feeling something may be wrong with my Maverick's install, because in addition to the weird TM "starfield" behavior, I'm also seeing the spinning beach ball every now and then; it kind of keeps showing up for a nano-second, then disappears. I KNOW my HD isn't failing, it was just fine with Mountain Lion, and I did the Apple Hardware Test too.
Any idea what could be wrong? I hate not having such a straightforward way of explaining the situation because my configuration is a bit "weird", but never had an issue in SL and ML, and I'm so confused whether or not this is a Mavericks bug (if it is, it's a serious one), or if it's something wrong with the TM backups (doubtful, because Snow Leopard showed everything just fine and in the proper fashion when I tested AFTER having the issue in Mavericks).
Okay. I'll just stop now. Any input would be helpful - and/or if anyone else is having weird issues with the Time Machine 'starfield' interface.
