Hi guys,

I bought a external USB powered hard drive.
I want to use it to store all my movies and also use it as a Time Machine backup.
I play my movies on the TV and realised today that the TV won't recognise Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) format.

Is it possible to have 2 partitions? One in Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) for Time Machine and the other in NTFS for my movies to play on my TV?

I can't seem to find the NTFS format option in Disk Utility.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

You will need to download and install something like NTFS-3G in order to do that, because the Mac can't natively write to NTFS drives or format them. Once you do that, yes, you will be able to set up two partitions, one for Time Machine and one NTFS for the TV.

Why not just share the files over your network? That way you don't have to move the drive about and use it purely for backups.

I'd assume that any device that can hook up to your TV and playback movies stored on an external hard drive can connect to a network share.
