After replacing my working 160GB HD on my 15-inch 2008-MBP with a 500GB HD, I booted off of my Leopard disc and formatted the new HD to a single partition in Disk Utility. After choosing to restore a backup using Time Machine, it recognized my external hard drive. I then choose the date and time that I wanted to use for my Time Machine backup. It eventually couldn't find my newly formatted.

What can I do to ensure that I can see my newly formatted HD as option to perform the restore on?

After rebooting to the OS disc my new hard drive was seen.
