I have a Mac Mini in my living room, purely as a media centre, with a 1TB USB drive attached, loaded with movies, TV shows, etc.

I now have 2 MacBooks (17" Pro and 13" MacBook) and decided to start using Time Machine.

I've got it set up to simply backup to the External HD on Mac Mini, and my 2 sparse disc images (1 for each MacBook) simply sit on the External HD drive, in amongst the other files/folders that are already on there.

Is there a better way of doing it? Maybe partitioning the External HD?

I'm unsure just how big the 2 backups could get - the MacBook has a 120GB drive (80 used) and the Pro a 500GB drive (200GB used), so at the moment both backups added together take up ~280GB on the drive, leaving me about 700GB for movies and stuff. But how big could the backups get? I presume they could just keep growing and growing till the External HD is full? That's why I maybe thought if I partition it into, say, 500 and 500, I know I'll always have a guaranteed 500GB for movies, etc (admittedly at the expense of a few older backups).
