i hope this wasn't a duplicate thread, i did my due diligence of searching the forum prior to posting.

do i have to use an external drive that's solely to be used for a time machine back up? i have a 1 tb drive, but it has all sorts of other files on it and i would hate to have to use it only for a time machine back up (as i have a new macbook air, and 1 tb is a lot to waste on a time machine)

thanks!

You can use it for other data as well. TM requires you to use HFS+ so if it's in another format, you will have to create a new partition or reformat the whole drive.

could you tell me how to do that briefly? it's in a mac os extended journal format right now.

Yeah. Just go to System Preferences > Time Machine and select your external HD.

that's what i thought, but so it's not going to "wipe" my external and then put on the backup for time machine? i guess that's what i'm terrified of :/
