time machine on internal or external hdd?

I'm about to add a 500gb hdd into my mbp and was wondering if i should partition the internal drive to use time machine or to just use my external drive instead.

If I was to use time machine on the external, would time machine automatically start every time I plug in the external hd?

Yes it does autostart. And i wouldn't partition the internal drive for backups...because the whole point of a backup is in case the internal drive fails.

good point. i guess i was more worried about accidentally deleting important stuff since ive never experienced a failed hd
