I'm running Mojave on an external SSD and wonder if I can partition the internal SATA drive and set it for auto time machine backups?

Is this possible? Would this really slow things down?

Yes.
No.
It is usually better to have time machine as separate external drive... But if you are running system from external ssd, you can use internal drive for tm for sure.

Cool. And making a partition for that should also work right? using the other space for other file storage.

Yes, but is it a good idea? The purpose of a backup is to mitigate the risk of disasters. Using the internal disk for TM mitigates against the risk of the SSD failing. But what if some other component of your Mac fails? Better to use the internal disk as additional data storage and backup both it and the SSD to an external HDD. That covers the risk of failure of any component of the Mac.

Makes sense. Still, might be a good option for me.
