Time machine only shows last backup

I recently formatted my 500gig external to use with time machine. I have been using it to backup for the past month, however when I go into time machine it only show the last backup that it did. It does not show any other previous backups that have completed for the past month. This is boggling my mind. If anyone has had this problem and fixed it please let me know.
