time machine opens in desktop

when i open time machine the finder opens in the desktop and not in the mac HD. so instead of seeing a full finder i just get a desktop window.

When you exit TM, and the desktop folder is on your desktop, under "View" click Show Toolbar. Then open TM and you'll see the sidebar in the desktop folder and you can choose what you want to see from there.
