I'm running Lion 10.7.5 on my 2009 white MacBook. How come every time Time Machine starts auto-backing up, my machine bogs down to a beach ball-consumed halt? Probably using too much memory or processor based on the stock amount the machine came with.

I looked around, but is there a way to ensure that Time Machine only backs up when the machine is sleeping?

Thanks!

Time machine can't be run on your system while it is sleeping. Only certain recent SSD notebooks can do that.

Might be worth checking your hard disk using disk utility to make sure there are not any problems with the hard disk. Also make sure you have enough free hard disk space for OS X to work effectively.

How much memory does your MacBook have ? - Lion is not brilliant if you only have 2GB, you might want to get an extra 2GB to take it 4GB if you have or downgrade to Snow Leopard.
