I recently got my macbook pro repaired. They replaced a hard drive and logic board. They happened to give me a larger hard drive (250gb, was previously 160gb), so I had to rearrange my backup drives. I had one 500gb external partitioned. One partition was 320gb for the time machine backup, the other 160gb for a bootable backup using super duper.
The problem:
Since my internal is now 250gb, I wanted to use the entire 500gb external for my time machine. I copied the backups.backupdb folder from the external onto my internal so that I could reformat the external. It was around 90gb worth of backups.
I've reformatted the external, but can't get the backups.backupdb folder to go back on it. I tried, and once the "preperation" was done, it said there was not enough room on the disk. I thought that was strange, since the folder is only 90gb, i have a full 500gb on the external, and I still have 100gb on my internal. I did a get info on each backup date folder inside the backups.backupdb folder. Each one is coming back anywhere from 50 - 70 gigs. I find this strange since all backups combined equal 90gb.
In hindsight, I should have dumped it to a disk image, but regardless, this seems like some strange activity. Basically, my mac thinks the backups.backupdb folder is around 2700gb, which it isn't, and would be impossible for my internal to hold anyway. Has anyone had this problem? What can I possibly do?
I'm willing to just delete it and start my backups from scratch, but it would take days for it to delete. Any suggestions?
